Here are 10 handy tips on how to save fuel.

Helps the environment - saves you money.

1. Remove excess weight from your car.

2. Streamline your vehicle – remove roof boxes when not in use, close windows at higher speeds to reduce drag.

3. Keep your car well maintained. Tyres should be checked regularly to make sure they are at recommended pressures.

4. Turn off the air conditioner or use it less. You can use up to 25% more fuel using your air conditioner. However do run the air conditioner once a week to keep the system in tip-top condition.

5. Drive smoothly. Sudden acceleration uses more fuel . Avoid sudden braking.

6. Read the road ahead. Releasing the accelerator earlier for an obstruction saves fuel and provides a smother journey.

7. Shift into a higher gear at lower speeds but avoid labouring the engine up inclines. Change up at an engine speed of around 2000 rpm in a diesel car and 2500 rpm in a petrol car.

8. Turn the engine off when you are stationary for a couple of minutes or more. Don’t leave the engine running especially in winter mornings so you have a nice warm car to leave in. Insurance companies don’t look kindly on paying out for  stolen vehicles which were left unattended with the engine running!

9. Do you need this trip? If so, plan your journey – getting lost costs money.

10. Consider car sharing.
